Nigeria is a signatory to Global Plan of Actions (GPAs) on Animal Genetic resources (AnGR) since 2007 with a call by FAO on countries to domesticate the GPAs and come up with national plan of Actions for the sustainable use, management and conservation of their domesticated animal genetic resources.
National biotechnology development Agency (NABDA) has a mandate for the exploration and exploitation of bioresources in Nigeria including Animal genetic resources through research for development. Specifically, NABDA has a strategic role to play in domestication of the GPAs on AnGR, Animal reproductive Techniques (ARTs) and lead research in Animal biotechnology in Nigeria.
Development of national Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the collection and preservation of semen from livestock of national economic importance is desirable and strategic to the goals of sustainable use, development through research and development of our national AnGR.
The main objective of this session is to validate the available, affordable and accessible technologies and techniques for the collection and preservation of livestock genetic resources especially semen in Nigeria.
The expected outcomes are validated processes, strategies and standard operating procedures for the country to guide the operators in the sector and respond to solving the problem of low livestock productivity and resilience in Nigeria.
Species specific experts on all the major livestock species of economic importance are invited to make presentation on their best practices and success stories in the collection and preservation of genetic resources in their livestock species of interest.
You are hereby warmly welcome to this session. I wish you a fulfilling experience in NABDA.
